The Government of Ukraine on Nov. 21 approved the draft Law of Ukraine on Ratification of the Agreement on establishment of joint scientific and technological space of the Commonwealth of Independent States, signed in November 1995. In addition, the Cabinet also approved the Protocols on amending the Agreement dated March 16, 2001 and November 20, 2009.

According to experts, the Verhovna Rada’s ratification of the Agreement approved by the government will give Ukraine an opportunity for a full participation in the innovation, scientific and technical cooperation with the countries of the former USSR, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.

In particular, this includes coordination and harmonization of science, technology and innovation policy envisioned by the decision of the Council of CIS Heads of Governments adopted in Yalta, Sept. 28, 2012, and signed by Ukraine as well.

Government analysts say Ukraine's commitment of rapprochement with the European Union does not contradict the expansion of our trade cooperation to the East, yet gives an impulse to the intensification of trade relations in another important direction of Ukraine's foreign policy.

Experts say that in 2014 Ukraine will become a chairman of the Commonwealth of Independent States: an honorary position will be transferred to Ukraine from Belarus. Implementation of all agreements reached in St. Petersburg about the CIS Free Trade Zone will be a major and permanent agenda item during the presidency of Ukraine, Azarov said. The government will make every effort to eliminate all barriers for mutual trade with CIS countries in 2014 in the same way as it was done with Europe in the preparation of the Association Agreement.
