In Ukraine, more than 5.5 million inmates are in need of constant medical supervision, chief of the medical department of the Penitentiary Service of Ukraine Yevhen Poliakov said, ForUm correspondent reports.

"5.5 million people are in need of constant medical supervision. Of these, 4.5 million are somatic patients and 1050 are TB patients, treated for more than one year. Now, three people undergo treatment in civil health care facilities. One of them is Yulia Tymoshenko," he said.

Poliakov confirmed that a large number of prisoners needs medical treatment. "This is especially true for patients with MDR TB, whose treatment term is one and a half years," he said.

In addition, according to Poliakov, it is difficult to say how much time takes treatment of somatic patients a year. "We can not predict how many times a year they would require treatment. They can stay in a hospital for 2-3 months," he said.

He added that annually more than a thousand fall under the article on release for health reasons, and 850 people are annually released.
