The European Commission hopes that the conflict situation between Ukraine and Russia on the issue of gas payments should not have a negative impact on the obligations of the parties on the transit of energy resources to the European Union.
This was stated by the Commission’s spokesperson for energy Marlene Holzner in Brussels on Thursday.
"We are fully aware of the fact that Ukraine and Russia is in debates now and that Ukraine should fulfill all obligations under the contracts. As already stated, we really rely on our partners that they will obey all the commitments in matters of gas supplies, as it was before," said the official representative of the European Commission, commenting on the current conflict situation between the "Naftogaz" and "Gazprom" the issue of gas payments.
Holzner also noted that the EU shares and supports Ukraine's aspirations to be not only a transit country for energy resources, but also to be a producer and exporter of oil shale and conventional gas in the medium term.
