Teachers in Luhansk region have united to establish Ukraine's first university educational district. Its creation was initiated by the faculty of Taras Shevchenko National University of Luhansk. Experts say the university district is a new form of co-operation of schools, lyceums, high schools and colleges with a university. Such districts have been successfully working in Russia, Belarus and Europe, the Information-Analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.

Government analysts say the advantage of the educational district is that a child who is receiving education at local community school, can also study specific subjects in other schools, as well as participating in the educational, athletic, cultural programs of other schools, colleges, high schools and universities forming the educational district. Thus, a holistic educational system is formed, which helps develop individual abilities of each child.

Of particular relevance this process is in rural areas, where only few children go to some classes at most of the schools. Experts say the educational district encourages co-operation among schools, optimal use of their material and technical, financial and human resources.

According to Ukrainian legislation, the educational district is voluntary association of different educational institutions that create a unified educational space in a particular territory. The district may include kindergartens, schools, vocational training, higher education institutions, and even cultural institutions and medical facilities. It helps enhance the quality of secondary education, create conditions for preparing and organizing pre-profile school education, even in remote rural areas. Pooling resources of various educational institutions and rational usage of their capacity facilitates flexible forms of learning.
