Kherson region agrarians today are closely working with scientists to gradually introduce the innovative environmental technologies in agro-industrial complex, the Information-analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine informs.

Regional managers have established a close relationship of agrarians and Institute of Irrigated Agriculture which resulted in better yields of environmentally friendly products.

One of major innovative projects was a dynamic development of drip irrigation. This technology was first used in Kherson region in mid-90s, but gained special and significant expansion only in the last few years. First of all, drip irrigation was used in vegetable farming, then at vineyards, and in 2012–2013, it was tested on corn, which ensured the yield up to 200 quintals per hectare. Farmers actually gathered over 1.5 million tons of grain and a record yield of vegetables, despite the fact that harvesting campaign is not over yet.

Agricultural experts note that irrigation in southern steppe is a guarantee of highly productive, sustainable, and environmentally friendly agricultural crops. Kherson region is a Ukrainian leader by area of drip irrigation which is about 426,800 hectares.

Governmental plans supported by President Viktor Yanukovych will increase the scope of irrigation projects.

The area of irrigated land in Ukraine will be increased by 1 million hectares to 1.4 million hectares in 2015. The area of irrigated land shall be increased, first of all, in southern regions, as, according to weather forecasts, there is a trend for gradual climate warming.

In order to improve the efficiency of melioration systems, Kherson Regional State Administration approved a «Comprehensive program for development of water facilities in Kherson region for the period to 2020». According to draft Comprehensive Program, the region will increase the total area of drip irrigation up to 75,000 hectares.

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, along with NAAS, has in turn developed a draft Government Resolution «Action plan for expanding irrigated areas and ensuring efficient use of irrigated land in southern region of Ukraine for the period of 2013–2017».

Proposals for recovering and upgrading irrigation systems in southern Ukraine are included in Program for revitalization of economy in 2013–2014. The government is planning to raise about 2 billion UAH to fund the Program.
