The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine suspended the investigation of the criminal proceedings against former rector Petro Melnyk, who had escaped from house arrest and currently stayed in the United States.

This was announced by chief of the PGO main department Volodymyr Krivutsenko at a briefing on Thursday.

"Putting Melnyk on international wanted was the reason for suspension of the investigation in the criminal proceedings against him," Krivutsenko said.

According to him, the investigation may be reopened if there is necessity for this, for example interrogation, etc.

Krivutsenko noted that the PGO sent to the U.S. Department of Justice a request for international assistance in carrying out investigations against Melnyk and his extradition to Ukraine.

"Despite the lack of agreement on legal assistance between Ukraine and the United States, we look forward to the fulfillment of our petitions," he noted.

Krivutsenko added that Ukraine would be satisfied with Melnyk’s extradition to any country, with which Ukraine has an agreement on legal assistance.
