Ukrainian family doctors may soon get some of the functions of psychiatrists, in particular, making diagnoses of depression, and combating such disease in the early stages, chief non-staff psychiatrist of the Health Ministry of Ukraine Iryna Pinchuk told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

"Now this diagnosis is made by neurologists and family doctors. We want to give up part of our duties to family doctors so they determined this disease, and accompany patients to a certain stage. It is much easier to prevent depression in the first phase rather than allow repeated manifestations, when a person should resort to a psychiatrist," she said.

According to Pinchuk, there has been an increase in patients with depression, but this is due to the fact that these patients have started to seek medical help.
