Ukraine could completely refuse gas importing from Russia in the next few years, if the current gas contract is not revised, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov told RIA Novosti and the TV channel "Russia 24".

"Under such price, we cut and will continue cutting (consumption of gas imports), and in the future, and these are not empty words, Ukraine will completely refuse to buy gas at this price ... I think it will happen in the coming years, taking into account the rate of increase in energy efficiency, reduce in gas consumption, switching to alternative sources, operating of our own gas fields, increase in gas production," Azarov said.

He also added that Ukraine is ready to prove the absurdity of the current gas contract between "Naftogaz" and "Gazprom" in case if the Russian gas holding files a suit against Kyiv for non-compliance with the contract.

"If Russia thinks we have violated the contract, it may file a lawsuit. There we will prove that the contract is nonsense to international law, it is absolutely absurd," Azarov said.

Ukrainian Premier noted that the contract is concluded in such a way that Ukraine can not withdraw from it unilaterally.
