Development of container and combined transportation is among the top priority areas of strategic importance for integration of Ukraine into global transportation system. This message was delivered by Oleksandr Vilkul, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, during a discussion of bilateral cooperation in the field of transport and transit with Argita Daudze, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Latvia in Ukraine.

According to the Information-analytical Bulletin of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, implementation of joint international projects, in particular, a container train «ZUBR» between
Tallinn and Illichevsk and passing through four countries (Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, and Estonia) is an important component of cooperation between the countries.

During the meeting, the parties discussed an opportunity of establishing a coordination center for the ZUBR project in Ukraine. Experts said the center will ensure the improvement of the project’s efficiency.

Vilkul said Latvian political support for Ukraine’s EU aspirations coincides with the development of economic relations between the two countries. «Development of container transportation in a corridor between the Black and Baltic Sea will help enhance efficiency of the whole European transport system,» Vilkul said.

Experts say the container train ZUBR was launched in Ukraine in February 2012. Since then, it already transported over 6.600 containers (over 2.200 20-foot containers and over
4.300 40-foot containers).

Implementation of ZUBR project lets the carriers cut rates for transportation (similar to all member countries) and get the additional discount (20%) from standard tariffs during export and import shipments. The project utilizes simplified customs procedure and border inspection. This allows the train to travel more than 2,000 kilometers in 58 hours, while a container delivery by road takes almost twice as much time.
