President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych may pardon former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko only after she files appropriate petition and serves half a term, leader of the party of Regions faction Oleksandr Yefremov told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

"In accordance with legal regulations, she must serve in prison half a sentence. In addition, the convicted person cannot be pardoned without an appropriate recourse to the President. Someone must make a request to Yanukovych. Tymoshenko has to serve half a term, and then ask for pardon," Yefremov explained.

Leader of the faction added that there are also unsolved issues regarding other criminal cases and a material debt to the state.

Yefremov also noted that he sees no special desire of the opposition to make necessary changes in the law on this issue. "It seems to me that people, who stand for release of Tymoshenko, do not want to see her at liberty. They do not make any efforts in legal terms," he said.
