Ukraine hopes that the current European Parliament will ratify the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said during a meeting with delegates from the European Parliament’s political group Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe.

"We have some optimism that the European Parliament will take this historic step together with Ukraine," Yanukovych said on Friday, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

The President also expressed hope that the visit of the European Parliament’s delegation will be another occasion for Europe to take note of positive changes, which are taking place in Ukraine ahead of the upcoming the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius.

"The contacts with the European Parliament are very important for us. In fact, we realize that the mechanism of relations that has been forming lately between Ukraine and the EU will largely depend on the position of the European Parliament," Yanukovych said.

He also noted that Ukraine has been building good relations with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe both at the level of inter-party relations, and at the state level.
