Citizen of Ukraine Ruslan Yakushev, who had worked as a seacook on the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise, was charged with piracy.
"Ukrainian crew member is formally charged with piracy," environmental organization "Greenpeace" posted on Twitter.
13 other Greenpeace activists were also accused of piracy.
Greenpeace lawyers consider accusation of piracy to be unfounded and intend to appeal against within 5-10 days.
If the activists are found guilty, they could face up to 15 years in prison.
