Ukraine’s signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union will help strengthen security in the Eastern Europe, Ukrainian foreign minister and chairperson-in-office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Leonid Kozhara has said at an international conference entitled "The role of international organizations in Ukraine’s national security."

"I’m confident that the signing by Ukraine and the EU of the Association Agreement, despite all of the pessimistic forecasts, will be an important factor for security in the Eastern European region," he said, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

Kozhara said that Ukraine would continue to deepen cooperation with the CIS, in particular, via its free trade area. He also said that this issue would be a priority during Ukraine’s presidency of the CIS in 2014.

"With the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, Ukraine should create a better tool to support democratic reforms at home," Kozhara added.
