Former Rector of the National University of the State Tax Service Petro Melnyk is in San Marcos, California (the United States), reads a statement posted on the official website of MP Hennadiy Moskal on Monday.
The statement notes that the Prosecutor General’s Office reported this in response to the MP’s query, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
The Prosecutor General’s Office also reported that a request had been sent to the United States for legal assistance in the criminal proceedings opened against Melnyk.
At the same time, Moskal said the former rector had left for the United States as a citizen of a Baltic republic, rather than as a Ukrainian, with the passport of that country. The MP said that an application for legal assistance in the issue of extradition could be submitted only by that Baltic country.
Earlier media reports said that Melnyk was in the United States, but they were not officially confirmed.
