German Thomas Bach was elected the new president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The decision was taken on Tuesday by a vote of IOC members at the 125th session of the organization in Buenos Aires.

Belgian Jacques Rogge, heading of the IOC since 2001, leaves his post after the session in Buenos Aires. Six functionaries claimed for his position: Thomas Bach (Germany), Serhiy Bubka (Ukraine), Ching-Kuo Wu (Taiwan), Richard Carrion (Puerto Rico), Ng Ser Miang (Singapore) and Denis Oswald (Switzerland).

"I thank everyone who supported my candidacy. It's a great trust, and I will try to justify it and do everything in my power. You should know that my door, my ears and my heart is always open to you," Bach said.
