Ukraine should not set cooperation in the European sector against relations with the Eurasian community, President Viktor Yanukovych said in interview with TV channel "Ukraine", ForUm learned from the President’s press service.

"We should not set European integration against building strategic relations with the countries of the Eurasian community," he said.

Yanukovych reminded that a number of documents defining the status of Ukraine in relations with the Customs Union and the Eurasian Union as an observer has been already signed.

"As for the referendum, it will be needed when it is clear prospect of joining a particular community within which we will need to delegate some of our sovereign rights under the Constitution. And here, of course, only the Ukrainian people will be able to take such a decision," the President said.

Moreover, Yanukovych noted that our government has been moving towards European integration for many years. "This autumn is an intermediate stage, which will sum up everything what has been done not just in the last few years, and, one might say, for a long period of time, since it has been taken a strategic decision on European integration policy," he said.

According to the President, the documents, planned to be signed at the summit of "Eastern Partnership", will actually reveal the depth of the integration, reached by Ukraine, and will allow moving forward.
