President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said the signing of a partnership agreement with Ukraine is "a real test for the "Eastern Partnership" as a whole".

President of the European Union Council Herman Van Rompuy described the expected signing of the Association Agreement with Ukraine as a "historic opportunity" and "a real test" for the "Eastern Partnership" as a whole.

In his speech at the annual EU Heads of Delegations Conference, held in Brussels on September 4, Van Rompuy said the EU is in constant contact with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on the signing of this Agreement.

"The Eastern Partnership summit, which we will be held in November in Vilnius, could be quite significant. The possible signing of a partnership agreement with Ukraine is the real test for the "Eastern Partnership" in general. This in turn requires further important steps on the part of Ukraine," Van Rompuy said.

"This is a historic opportunity for us, and we remain in contact with President Yanukovych on this matter," he stressed.
