The Verkhovna Rada has not supported the legislative initiative, providing for life-long driving ban, as well as for 10 years imprisonment of drivers for drunk driving, ForUm correspondent reports.

The bill on amendments to some laws of Ukraine on prevention of deaths on roads authored by individual MP Oleg Lyashko was supported by only 118 MPs out of 226 required.

"In Ukraine, drunk driving is not a mass phenomenon, which would threaten the national security of the country, and the introduction of such harsh measures is unacceptable," head of the Parliament’s committee on national security Volodymyr Lytvyn said.

In addition, members voiced their comments: "The introduction of such a tough responsibility (life-long driving ban - Ed.) deprives citizens of the right to pardon, and violates the right to work." In addition, according to parliamentarians, unscrupulous traffic cops can take advantage of these standards to put pressure on the drivers.
