Ukraine and Japan plan to launch a small satellite to monitor the levels of radiation at Ukraine’s Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Japan’s Fukushima-1 Nuclear Power Plant, foreign minister of Japan Fumio Kishida told a briefing in Kyiv on Monday after the talks with his Ukrainian counterpart.
"Ukrainian launch vehicles and very small satellites which were developed by the University of Tokyo will be used in this project. The first stage of the project is scheduled to begin soon, and the two governments have agreed to provide maximum support to this project," Kishida said at, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
Ukrainian foreign minister Leonid Kozhara for his part said that Ukraine was interested in this project, but it should first undergo domestic and international procedures before being implemented.
"With regard to the specific amounts [of funding], this matter is being discussed between relevant agencies of Ukraine and Japan," Kozhara said.
