The fate of the Association Agreement with the EU depends on Ukraine, presidential adviser and the country’s commissioner for foreign policy and integration processes and representative to the EU Kostiantyn Yeliseyev stated.

"I would like to stress that no one will prevent us from signing the [association] agreement. Only we ourselves can mess up the signing of the agreement," he said on Channel 5 on Saturday during a telethon dedicated to the Independence Day.

"The key to the signing of the Association Agreement is in Kyiv. It depends on whether we are able to achieve tangible progress in the matters that were defined by our European partners," Yeliseyev said, Interfax-Ukraine informed.

He noted that he was not talking about something that had been imposed on Ukraine. "This is what we should do for our own sake, for the sake of our citizens. Moreover, if we take the so-called [EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stephan] Fule’s list, there are many requirements, many things that we should have done already since the time of gaining independence," the diplomat said.

Yeliseyev stressed that Ukraine was currently "within arm’s reach of the signing of the association agreement."

He expressed the hope that MPs and politicians would use the European integration not to saw discord, but to build unity.

Asked about the problems in trade with Russia, Yeliseyev stressed that there was "an ongoing dialogue, constant telephone contacts with European officials concerning the [trade] dispute with the Russian Federation."

The diplomat said that next week he would fly to Brussels to attend a meeting of the European Parliament’s committee, which would also address this matter.
