Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has confirmed the country’s desire to join the European Union and enhance cooperation with strategic partners, he said at the events marking the 22nd anniversary of the country’s independence in Kyiv on Saturday.
"Association with the EU should be an important stimulus for Ukraine to continue to develop a modern European state," the President stated.
"At the same time, we should maintain and deepen our relations and integration processes with Russia, the countries of the Eurasian community, other world leaders and the new centres of economic development," Yanukovych said.
"This is a choice of Ukraine, and we are jointly responsible for its realization," he said.
He stressed that Ukraine has become a responsible ally and partner for other countries. "We intend to build partnership relations and are ready to make compromises that enhance the stability and ensure the prosperity for us and all our neighbours," the President said.
