Ukraine declared its independence on August 24, 1991. Before it as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was part of the Soviet Union. The Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine of August 24, 1991 was adopted on December 1, 1991 by the national voting.

This event became the state holiday only in June of 1992, when the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine on August 24.

In fact, the first Independence Day was celebrated on July 16, 1991 in memory of the fact that the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian USSR approved the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine on July 16, 1990.

The first Constitution of the independent Ukrainian state was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on June 28, 1996. Article 1 of the Constitution states that "Ukraine is a sovereign, independent, democratic, social and law-based state."
