Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov considers that the Ivano-Frankivsk regional council blocked a decision on shale gas production for far-fetched reasons.

"Ivano-Frankivsk regional council blocked the implementation of important projects for the state for absolutely ridiculous reasons. Does that increases the independence or not? Obviously not. Production of own gas is a direct path to energy independence of Ukraine. This is our national interests," Azarov said, opening the Cabinet’s meeting, ForUm correspondent reports.

According to him, Ivano-Frankivsk regional council, solving internal political disputes, harms the whole state.

In turn, energy and coal industry minister of Ukraine Eduard Stavytsky told a briefing that he hopes to reach a compromise with the Ivano-Frankivsk regional council.

He stressed that today the interdepartmental committee will consider the proposal of the regional council together with the investor company Chevron. "I am convinced that we will reach mutual understanding. I told yesterday representatives of political forces (of the regional council - Ed.) that for the Cabinet it does not matter what part of the state produces gas. We are all Ukrainians, and not divide the country into East and West," he said.

At the same time, the minister said that if a common language with the local regional council is not found, the government will have to submit this issue for the Parliament’s consideration.
