A month-long state of emergency has been declared in Egypt after more than 270 people were killed when security forces stormed the Cairo protest camps supporting ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

The clashes spread from the capital to other parts of the country, including the Mediterranean city of Alexandria. A curfew from 7pm to 6am was declared in Cairo and 13 other provinces.

The health ministry put the number of dead at 278 - including 43 police officers - with hundreds more injured. Pro-Morsi group the Muslim Brotherhood claims more than 2,500 died.
