July 16, former U.S. intelligence officer Edward Snowden sent a formal petition for temporary asylum to the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation.

According to the lawyer Anatoly Kucherena, he decided to announce that Snowden has handed over documents after a meeting with the American at Sheremetyevo Airport, where he has been since June 23.

"Since Snowden cannot leave the transit area of "Sheremetyevo", he filled all the necessary forms, wrote an application and gave it to the invited employee of the Federal Migration Service of the Russian Federation," Kucherena added.

Snowden announced his intention to get a temporary asylum in the Russian Federation on July 12 during a press conference at the airport. Among other things, he said that he feels relatively safely only in Russia, although later he would like to move to Latin America. However, Kucherena said that the plans about Latin America are not accurate, they may be revised.
