OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara has congratulated Ranko Krivokapic on his election as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE PA), the Foreign Ministry's press office said in a statement Thursday.

"The Ukrainian Presidency remains committed to the policy of deepening cooperation between the Parliamentary Assembly and intergovernmental institutions of the OSCE," Kozhara said, wishing Krivokapic success on his new position.

He also noted the active role of the Parliamentary Assembly in improving the effectiveness of the OSCE, the development of democracy and prosperity, building confidence between the member countries of this organization.

Ranko Krivokapic was elected the OSCE PA President for the period of one year. The voting took place on July 3 in Istanbul at the 22nd Session of the OSCE PA.

A nine-time elected parliamentarian, Krivokapic has been president of the Montenegrin Parliament since 2003 and has served previously in the parliaments of Yugoslavia from 1993 to 1997 and the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro from 2003 to 2006.

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly is comprised of 323 parliamentarians from 57 countries spanning Europe, Central Asia and North America. The Assembly provides a forum for parliamentary diplomacy, monitors elections, and strengthens international cooperation to uphold commitments on political, security, economic, environmental and human rights issues.
