The government will develop investment projects to restore and modernize irrigation systems in Ukraine, agrarian policy and food minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk told reporters as part of his working visit to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea on Monday.

"There is an instruction of the Prime Minister to develop a program on the modernization of irrigations system in Ukraine, which is 2.5 million hectares. It would increase grain production by 3-4 times especially that modern drip irrigation provides efficiency, both in cost and in growing," Prysiazhniuk added, Ukrinform informed.

According to him, the cultivation of grains and vegetables in the southern regions and Crimea without irrigation remains very complex, and these regions cannot do without irrigation. Therefore, the program of economic development provides that the irrigated areas will be increased.

In particular, the minister noted that restoration of irrigation in Crimea and Kherson region will increase gross production to nearly 27 billion USD a year.
