Three Kharkiv mountain climbers were among the tourists who were killed by militants in Pakistan, President of the Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing in Kharkiv region Hennadiy Kopiyka said.

"Oleksandr Zakolodny (a member of the international group of climbers) has called me today and said that three members of the expedition, all three of them – Kharkiv residents, were killed. These are Ihor Sverhun, the team leader, Badavi Kashayev and Dmytro Koniayev. Their bodies have been taken to Islamabad and are currently undergoing identification. We were asked for their photographs," Kopiyka told Interfax-Ukraine.

The international expedition, which included climbers from Ukraine, Georgia and Slovakia, to Nanga Parbat (8,125 meters) started in early June. A world-class athlete, Ihor Sverhun, lead the group.

Earlier reports said that five Ukrainian, three Chinese nationals and one Lithuanian or Russian national, died in an extremist attack on a hotel in the north of Pakistani Kashmir on the night between June 22 and 23. A citizen of Pakistan was also killed in the attack.

The incident occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan area which has been considered one of the safest parts of Pakistan but in recent years it has seen several attacks of radicals on members of the Shia minority.

The police launched a search for the attackers who managed to escape.
