Every fourth citizen of Ukraine throughout life needs transfusion of blood components (red cells, platelets) or treatment with medicines made from blood components, head of the healthcare reform and development department of the Healthcare Ministry Yevhen Morozov told press conference, ForUm correspondent reports.

"First of all, traumatized people are in need. According to statistics, every year about 40 thousand people in Ukraine get all sorts of injuries, and many of them have a chance to survive only in the case of timely help. Experience in Afghanistan shows that the wounded, who received blood transfusion, survived 60% more often than those, who did not receive this therapy," Morozov said.

According to him, people, who undergo chemotherapy, and those whose treatment involves the administration of drugs containing blood components, are also in need for blood transfusion.

The official reminded that as of today no country has a valid replacement for human blood.
