Ukraine ranked 111th out of 162 countries in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2013, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, coming down for the year by 40 positions.

As stated in the press release of the Institute, Eurasia and Russia are among the least peaceful regions in the world, second only to South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

"Last year the position of Ukraine, Tajikistan (118) and Russia (155) deteriorated significantly," the rating compilers stressed.

Ukraine lags behind Belarus (96), China (101), Kazakhstan (78) and Turkmenistan (103). The United States rank 100th.

The index is based on 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, grouped into three main groups.
Among the criteria is existence and extent of the conflict, the level of stability and security in the state and the militarization level.

Iceland was again recognized as the most peaceful country in the world.

The most peaceful region is Europe - here there are 13 of the top twenty countries. In the top three, after Iceland, there is Denmark and New Zealand.
