Ukraine prepares national plan of adaptation to climate change

The national plan of adaptation to climate change is being prepared in Ukraine. The plan will touch upon all branches of the economy, including agriculture, energy, health care.

Its preparation involves leading research institutes of Ukraine, head of the greenhouse gas emissions department of the State Environmental Investment Agency of Ukraine Valentyn Shlykhta informed.

He pointed out that the issues of reducing greenhouse gas emissions are discussed at the annual conferences of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

According to him, Ukraine agriculture after the energy and industry is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases. To reduce them, Ukraine need to use effective machinery, which burns less fuel and lubricants, to develop processing of agricultural waste and biomass for energy production.

According to Shlykhta, Ukraine's annual greenhouse gas emissions are more than 400 million tons of CO2 equivalent and in 2011 it increased by 5% compared with 2010.
