CU to give impetus to Ukrainian economy development, Azarov says

Customs Union opens up the possibility for Ukraine's economic development, not contradicting the international obligations of the country, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov said opening the Cabinet’s meeting, ForUm correspondent reports.

"Amid the global recession, the market of the Customs Union, the countries of which continue to develop, opens the possibility for Ukraine's economic development.

Moreover, the lion's share of cooperative, productive ties of the Ukrainian companies, as well as cultural and humanitarian ties between our people is focused on the CIS market. We should work effectively and strengthen our positions in this market. In fact, the partners of Ukrainian companies in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan await this. And how should we work if we do not know how the rules of the work will change?" Azarov said.

The PM asked those present to remember what losses Ukraine suffered, when the vehicle recycling tax was introduced last year.

"Ukraine was pinned down to facts and could not give its arguments before making a decision. As a result, Ukrainian automakers have cut production of trucks by nearly 50%, of passenger cars - by 61.2%. It was even about to completely stop the car factories and fire all the workers. We were forced to take balanced measures to protect the domestic auto industry.

So, who benefited from such a confrontation?" he asked rhetorically.

According to him, with the signing of a memorandum Ukraine won the opportunity to participate in the meetings of the working bodies of the Eurasian Economic Commission, to get familiar with project documents and voice its opinions on the discussed solutions.
