70.5 thousand road traffic accidents, killing 1.306 people, occurred for five months of 2013 in Ukraine, director of road safety and automation systems department of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine Serhiy Budnik said during the roundtable, ForUm correspondent reports.

President of the Road Safety Association Mykhailo Berlin added that about 5 million are killed and 40 million people get disabilities on local roads every year.

"70% of the injured and dead are men under the age of 50 years, that is, the working potential of the country. In general, accidents inflict significant economic damage as well. Thus, according to the World Bank (WB), our country annually loses 2.5-3% of GDP, or about $ 5 billion from road traffic accidents. The Cabinet provided for 3.9%GDP growth in the state budget 2013, so if come from the World Bank calculations, almost all the projected growth of the economy is going to pay off the losses from the accidents," the expert said.

He added that the situation in this regard will change only once the technique will be developed to assess the socio-economic impact of road accidents and their technical methods of investigation, and the equivalent of the cost of human life will be raised.
