During the years of independence, mortality rate in Ukrainian orphanages has decreased by 4.5 times, healthcare minister Rayisa Bohatyriova said during a video conference “Ask a minister”, ForUm correspondent reports.
"Thanks to the consistent activities in relation to child abandonment, the introduction of a new, family-oriented social model of children's homes, our country since independence has the following characteristics. The mortality rate in orphanages has decreased 4.5 times. Number of children, transferred to other orphanages has decreased by half. Reintegration of children from Healthcare Ministry orphanages in a family environment has increased by 17%," the minister said.
Bohatyriova added during these years, the number of children abandoned by their parents in maternity hospitals has reduced three times. In 2004, number of such parents was 1.500, in 2012 - 566.
