Government plenipotentiary for cooperation with Russia and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States Valery Muntiyan believes that the main purpose of the visit of President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to Russia, which took place on May 26, was discussion and solving the issue of fall of the Ukrainian-Russian trade turnover.

"I believe that the purpose of the visit was discussion of trade and economic relations with Russia as it is our largest partner," Muntiyan said.

In addition, according to him, the President of Ukraine planned to discuss the further development of cooperation within joint projects as well as to hand over approved by the Cabinet of Ministers the draft memorandum of granting Ukraine observer status in the Customs Union, the Common Economic Space (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan).

According to the government commissioner, issues of the energy sector were discussed during the visit.

However, Muntiyan refused to answer the question whether the establishment of a consortium to manage the Ukrainian gas transportation system was discussed, adding that there were closed-door talks at the level of heads of state.

Muntiyan also admitted that Ukraine's European integration could be discussed during the visit.
