If damages on roads are not eliminated this season, no roadway may remain next year, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said, opening Cabinet’s meeting.

He informed that in general twice as large area of roadway has been damaged this year than usually - about 5 million square meters. "Of them, more than 2 million square m are still left to be repaired ... During May road workers expect 400 thousand square meters more to be damaged. That is, process of destruction continues as maintenance of roads in violation of operational standards continues as well," PM noted.

Azarov also stressed that to date construction-repair organizations reached a boundary limit of their capabilities. "Every day, 100 thousand square meters of roadway are repaired. Twice as many workers and equipment than last year work on roads around the clock. 12 million people, nearly a thousand repair crews, up to 500 units of road vehicles and 90 asphalt plants work," he said.

At the same time, the PM said that even such forces and the pace of work is insufficient. "Let me remind you all that 40-50 million UAH of annual investments during ten years may bring our roads back to normal condition. The government, "Ukravtodor" and local authorities need to find new solutions," he added.

Azarov charged the Infrastructure Ministry, the Finance Ministry together with the heads of local administrations to work out the program on raising resources for road maintenance in June and September of this year.
