President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych urged Ukrainians to honor the memory of victims of political repressions, ForUm learned from the President’s press service.

"Dear compatriots! Today Ukraine honors the memory of its sons and daughters, who died from the atrocities of the totalitarian regime. Millions of people following decisions of the Stalinist authorities were wrongly declared "enemies of the people", actually executed without trial, doomed to suffer and die of starvation in the camps or in exile. The most talented, hard-working and socially active citizens usually were victims of repressions," the President’s address to the Ukrainian people on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression reads.

"We sympathize with all the people, who have suffered from totalitarianism. Our general awareness of the extent of the tragedy should be the pledge of triumph of humanism, mutual understanding and peace. Every year there become fewer living witnesses of those hard times. Our duty is to preserve their memories, inform descendants of the truth about the past, to honor the dignity of the dead compatriots. Let us pray for the eternal peace of the innocently tortured. Bright memory to them," the statement reads.
