Russia could agree to assign Ukraine with the status of observer in the Customs Union, Ukrainian President in 1994-2005 Leonid Kuchma said.

“I think yes,” he told, when asked whether Russia could agree to make Ukraine an observer in the Customs Union, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“It absolutely does not mean anything to Russia. And being an observer in this situation… You see, the point is in an exclusively economic union at this stage for three states to solve problems… They will look down on us like that and they will decide on their own,” Kuchma said.

At the same time, while speaking about prospects for the signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union, Kuchma stressed that Ukraine will have to make a political decision where it should move.

“If we look at the Customs Union, it has a lot of drawbacks from the viewpoint of Ukraine. If we look at the European Union, they have not fewer of them… A civilized choice has to be made here. And you know who has the final word,” Kuchma said.
