Journalists should work in safe conditions, OSCE chairperson-in-office, foreign minister of Ukraine Leonid Kozhara said on eve of the World Press Freedom Day, the press service of the Foreign Ministry informs.
"Unfortunately, even in the OSCE region there are causes for concern due to improper observance of the rights of journalists, including issues of their safety. Many of the attacks against them remain unsolved, and the artists and customers remain not punished. This state of affairs is unacceptable. All journalists and media workers should perform their professional duties without fear in a safe environment. Crimes against them cannot be left unpunished," Kozhara stated.
"Theme of this year's World Press Freedom Day reflects the daily work of the OSCE. Our representative on freedom of the media supports the OSCE participating states in finding ways to secure safety of journalists and combat impunity," the acting chairman said, recalling that the issue of media freedom is among the key priorities of the Ukrainian presidency.
"Creation of an appropriate legal framework to ensure the freedom of the media will contribute to strengthening the OSCE commitments in this area," he added.
This year OSCE will hold a workshop on legislative support of media freedom.
