The list of people receiving a state assistance as victims of the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant should be carefully checked, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych stated during his working visit to the State Specialized Enterprise "Chornobyl NPP", ForUm correspondent reports.
"Government assistance should be provided only to those people, who need it and have a legal right," the President considers.
At the same time, he expressed belief that the payments to Chornobyl liquidators should be increased.
"About five million people suffered because of the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, nearly half of them were citizens of Ukraine, and about 105 thousand Ukrainians became invalids as a result of this tragedy. The government is providing assistance to these people. But I think this is not enough," Yanukovych said.
The President noted that this year, 2 billion 623 million UAH will be allocated from the state budget for social payments to Chornobyl veterans.
