President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych called on Ukrainians to commemorate the victims of the Chernobyl tragedy, ForUm learned from the press service of the President.
"With a heavy heart we once again commemorate those who, taming the nuclear element, sacrificed themselves to save millions of people and defend the lives of future generations. May the memory of them live forever. Ukraine today honors the heroes, who at various times selflessly saved our land, prevented the spread of the deadly danger. We express our gratitude to the states, nations, all caring, who continues helping in elimination of the deleterious effects of the accident, those who now perform important work to minimize them, building a new safe shelter over the destroyed reactor," the President said.
According to Yanukovych, the memory of the great tragedy calls for unity and consolidation of the efforts of the government and society around the solution of complex problems associated with the implementation of projects to create the Chernobyl environmentally safe system, rehabilitation of contaminated sites and their further development. "This requires us to constantly mobilize significant budget and labor resources. At the same time the state should pay maximum attention to the problems of the affected population, constant concern for strengthening social protection of Chernobyl veterans," he said.
"Today, on the anniversary of the accident, I ask you to remember all the victims and to appreciate the deed of the heroes of Chernobyl. I wish you good health, optimism, happiness and well-being," the address states.
As a reminder, today is the 27th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The accident occurred at night on April 26, 1986. There was an explosion, which completely destroyed the 4th reactor.
