216 foreigners have applied to the migration authorities for a refugee status in Ukraine.
This was discussed at a meeting of Ukraine's Deputy Prosecutor General Lilia Frolova with representatives of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine reported.

"As of April 1, 2013, the migration authorities received appeals for a refugee status from 216 people. Therefore, our country's leadership attaches great importance to this issue," Frolova informed.

According to her, the problem of protecting the rights of refugees has acquired special relevance to Ukraine due to the historic events that took place during and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and do not lose their acuteness due to the geographical location of the state.

In turn, the Director of the UNHCR Bureau for Europe, Vincent Cochetel thanked the Ukrainian counterparts for cooperation and welcomed the initiative to establish an interagency working group to work out problem issues in the field of refugees and asylum seekers. According to him, Ukraine has managed to establish an effective legal framework for the protection of the rights of refugees.
