Signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union will open a new chapter in the history of Ukraine, former President of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski said during the meeting with chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Rybak, the press service of the Ukrainian parliament informs.

"We're talking not just about the signing of the Agreement, but also about a very long-term cooperation between Ukraine and the EU. Association with the EU is a strategy for Ukraine," Kwasniewski noted.

He also stated the importance of well-coordinated work of the Verkhovna Rada until the summit of "Eastern Partnership" in Vilnius. "It is very important how the Verkhovna Rada will work on the way towards signing the Association Agreement. Image of working, not blocked, Parliament is important for Ukraine," the former president of Poland said.

In turn, present at the meeting, former European Parliament President Pat Cox said that Ukraine and the EU together are "on the way to Vilnius." As he said, "a lot of steps have been done, and many remains to be done".

"We are pleased with the decision on humanization of criminal legislation and pardon of Lutsenko and Filipchuk. This is a very important sign of good serious intentions, and it is appreciated in Brussels," the politician said.

He also noted that the President and the leaders of political factions of the European Parliament called on all political forces, represented in the Verkhovna Rada, to work together on important issues such as the reform of electoral law, judiciary and prosecution system. "We need to develop the capacity for mutual respect," Cox concluded.
