The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union has asked President Viktor Yanukovych to pardon former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, the union's press service reports.

"Taking into account the fact that all of the procedural measures have been completed in the case under which Tymoshenko is serving her sentence and given your position regarding the need to humanize punishment, as well as taking into account European standards of human rights, which foresee the provision of effective medical care to persons held in prisons, we ask you to pardon Yulia Tymoshenko and release her from punishment under article 85 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine," the statement reads, UKRINFORM informs.

The union also noted that the current condition of the former Prime Minister needs constant supervision and control in specialized medical institutions, which, according to the authors of the appeal, it hard to ensure in penal institutions.
