There is no issue of increasing the excise tax on diesel fuel and gasoline in Ukraine today, infrastructure minister Volodymyr Kozak told journalists before the Cabinet’s meeting, ForUm correspondent reports.

He explained that the Infrastructure Ministry has recently considered not the question of raising excise taxes, but the state of roads and their improvement. In addition, European experience in this field was studied and the European excise tax on diesel fuel was discussed.

"Europe has the excise tax on diesel fuel. In some countries, it is ten times higher than we have ... Our excise tax on diesel fuel is 46 euros per ton, in other countries - minimum 360 euros per ton, in Russia - 150 euros," Kozak said, adding that today there are no initiatives on increasing the excise tax on diesel fuel and gasoline.

Responding to a clarifying question, when the excise tax can be raised, the minister said: "It all depends on how the budget, the incomes of our citizens will be formed. Later, in 3-4 years, this issue will be on agenda, but today it is not".

Earlier, the Infrastructure Ministry said that today the optimization of excise duty is just a suggestion of the Infrastructure Ministry and the Ukravtodor State Road Agency, caused by the need to increase funds to improve the quality of roads in Ukraine. Road builders propose to introduce a phased, with the growth of the economy, increase in excise duties on petroleum products to the minimum European sizes by 2018.
