In epidemic season of 2012-2013, 11% of Ukraine's population (5.1 million people) came down with influenza, head of the Center for Influenza and ARVI of the state institution "Center for Disease Control and Monitoring" under the Healthcare Ministry of Ukraine Tetiana Dihanovska said, the Healthcare Ministry press service informs.

"42% of them are children. Out of the hospitalized people with a diagnosis of flu, 76% of them are children under 17 years," the doctor said.

According to her, the level of vaccination coverage in the current epidemic period is estimated at only 0.73%. "Immunization of population from influenza was mainly conducted by enterprises - (40% of the total), and local budgets (37%). Proportion of the population vaccinated at their own expense, amounted to only 16%," Dihanovska said.

In turn, head of the department of respiratory and viral infections of the Institute of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases of Ukraine Alla Myronenko said that, unfortunately, Ukraine doesn’t have its proper own. "Immunization in Ukraine is carried out with the use of foreign vaccines of Russian and Western production. Now Ukraine ranks 51st out of 71 countries in terms of vaccination, which is estimated at 0.5-3% per year," she specified.

According to Myronenko, despite the fact that flu and colds are traditionally associated with autumn-winter period, experts know that the level of risk is high in other periods as well, which is why a healthy lifestyle, and a number of preventive measures aimed at strengthening the immune system, are so important during a year.
