President's Commissioner for Children's Rights Yuri Pavlenko considers that the work of consulates for control over children adopted by foreign families is insufficient, he told a briefing, ForUm correspondent reports.

"I must admit that the work of consulates of the Ukrainian embassies is insufficient. This situation requires quick government decisions," he said.

According to him, there are 21574 children adopted by foreigners in 34 countries. According to him, the greatest number of children live in the United States (8250), Italy (6212), Spain (3121), France (1310) and Israel (907).

"Analyzing the situation in general, some problematic issues were identified," Pavlenko noted.

He also stressed that as a result of his visit to the U.S. the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers received a number of proposals to improve the legislation. "We have to perform the task of the President and to know the fate of every child living abroad and to provide him with assistance and protection," he said.
