President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz considers that the release of former interior minister Yuriy Lutsenko is a step in the right direction, he stated.

"Ukraine needs an honest and independent judiciary, and the release of Lutsenko is a step in the right direction. It happened after the release of former defense minister Valeriy Ivashchenko in August. We continue to improve the conditions and address the case of Yulia Tymoshenko, who is still held by the Ukrainian authorities," Schultz said.

The European Parliament President also thanked co-chairs of the monitoring mission Pat Cox and Alexander Kwasniewski for their work in Ukraine.
