The release of ex-interior minister Yuri Lutsenko confirms the seriousness of intentions of the Ukrainian government to sign the Association Agreement with the European Union in autumn this year, former president of Poland, member of the European Parliament observation mission Mr. Alexander Kwasniewski said.

"I think that this pardon was one of the most important topics of our talks and is a testament to the fact that Ukraine is seriously thinking about the association with the EU and really wants to sign the Association Agreement in Vilnius this year," Mr. Kwasniewski said.

He said he is pleased with the release of Lutsenko, and added that it is also the result of the mission of the European Parliament.

"I am satisfied, as this is the success of our mission, which I and Pat Cox have patiently performed since last May. We have paid more than a dozen visits to Ukraine, held talks with the President, Prime Minister and opposition," Mr. Kwasniewski said.

According to him, the decision of the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych on pardon of Lutsenko has confirmed that "the persistent diplomacy, which is carried out with the help of the EU mission, makes sense."

Mr. Alexander Kwasniewski added that the release of Lutsenko has removed one of the obstacles to the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU.
