While making a proposal to the President of Ukraine to pardon former interior minister Yuri Lutsenko, the Commission on pardon under the President of Ukraine based on the need for consistent implementation of the policy of decriminalization and the humanization of the law, member of the Commission on pardon under the President of Ukraine Olena Lukash, the President’s press service reports.

She stressed that the policy is aimed at bringing Ukrainian legislation in line with the European standards in the protection of human rights and freedoms.

According to her, the Commission received petitions from the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Valeria Lutkovska, former President of the European Parliament Mr. Pat Cox, former President of Poland Mr. Aleksander Kwasniewski with the request to pardon Yuri Lutsenko. The humanitarian mission of Mr. Pat Cox and Mr. Alexander Kwasniewski was supported in writing by wife of Yuri Lutsenko - Iryna.

"The decision of the Commission was taken unanimously and was performed fully as of today," member of the Commission on pardon said.

As Olena Lukash informed, the Commission on pardon is a collegial body, which functions under the President of Ukraine. It consists of 19 people. Its decisions shall be taken by a majority of the composition. The Commission shall fully, completely and carefully study the documents filed for a pardon. The Commission shall also examine the circumstances, which indicate the possibility of pardon or the rejection of such a possibility, and makes recommendations to the President. If the President agrees with the decision of the Commission, he shall issue a relevant decree, member of the Commission for pardon under the President of Ukraine stressed.
